Dephlogisticated nitrous air

Davy s research was to make him famous, not because he performed dangerous experiments, but because he discovered a new recreational drug. In 1800 he published a 580-page book titled Researches, Chemical and Philosophical, Chiefly Concerning Nitrous Oxide, or Dephlogisticated Nitrous Air, and Its Respiration in which he discussed his discovery of, and researches on, laughing gas. Describing its effects, Davy wrote ... [Pg.83]

This uncomplicated molecule (N2 O) was produced for the first time two centuries ago—in 1772—by the chemist and political refugee Sirjoseph Priestly. He was also the first person to isolate oxygen. As Priestly tried to determine whether dry carbon dioxide would dissolve iron, he prepared a gas that he named "Dephlogisticated Nitrous Air. He experimented with this gas, soon to be known as nitrous oxide, but never inhaled it. [Pg.489]

Berthollet attempted to find the composition of ammonia by decomposing ammonium nitrate by heat, collecting the water in receivers cooled in ice and the gas evolved at the pneumatic trough. The gas was soluble in water to form a neutral solution, supported a taper flame almost as effectively as vital air, and could be regarded as a nitrous gas which contains a little more of vital air than the ordinary , and was apparently the same as Priestley s dephlogisticated nitrous air (p. 289). This was nitrous oxide. Its composition is given incorrectly, since it contains less oxygen than nitrous air. [Pg.260]

He has overlooked Priestley s dephlogisticated nitrous air, nitrous oxide. [Pg.649]
