Secondary explosives (also known as high explosives) are different from primary explosives in that they cannot be detonated readily by heat or shock and are generally more powerful. Secondary explosives can be initiated to detonation only by a shock produced by the explosion of a primary explosive. Ref 26, p 387) that the gases from the expIns of NGu (Nitroguanidine) were much less erosive than chose from other expls of comparable force, and considered this fact to be in harmony with his general conclusion chat the hotter expls are the more erosive. In his experiments the explns were made to take place in a steel bomb, 17.8cc capacity, equipped with a crusher gauge and with removable perforated, steel plug thru the perforation in which the hot gases from the expln were allowed to escape. They swept away, or eroded off, a certain amt of the metal. 

Our own experience is confined to polynitramines of various types (ten in all) which follow the above classification and show the NO2 absorptions in the ranges 1587—1530 cm and 1292—1260 cm . This is presumably the region of absorption for nitramines generally, except for the cases of nitroguanidines, and ureas in which alternative prototropic forms are possible which might absorb at higher frequencies. 

The preparation of diazo hydrocarbons is generally carried out by the alkaline decomposition of Af-nitroso-./V-alkyl derivatives such as the iV-nitroso derivatives of sulfonamides, amides, and phthal-amides, urethanes, ureas, nitroguanidines and /7-alkylaminoisobutyl ketones.
