Photoresponsive membranes of cellulose-2,4-diacetate incorporating 6-nitro-l, 3, 3 -trimethylspiro-(2H-l-benzopyran-2,2 -indoline) have been prepared and chiroptical and fluorescence properties of optically active co-polymers of acenaphthalene with methyl acrylate/methacrylate have been investigated. Marked optical activity is induced in the aromatic units only for the co-polymer with methyl methacrylate. This difference in behaviour is associated with an overall higher main-chain flexibility and conformational freedom in acrylates compared with methacrylates. Aortic rings from the spontaneously hypertensive rats (8-12 mo old) were incubated in the presence of nitric oxide inhibitor [Nco-nitro-i-argi-nine (NOLA) l 0 " M] for 60 min to unmask the abnormal contraction as described previously (13,18). Purified fatty acids were added cumulatively in small volumes (<15 pL), and the changes in tension monitored for a further 30-min period. DHA, docosahexaenoic acid EPA, eicosapentaenoic acid ALA, a-linolenic acid LA, linoleic acid. Vehicle (ethanol) controls were conducted and showed minimal effect on contraction. Results are means + SEM, n = 4-6 experiments.

Very similar spectra obtained from squalene, ubiquinone, triolein, oleic acid, linolenic acid, linoleic acid, mentha-1,8-diene, erucic acid, lecithin irradication of 25 nitro compounds (aryl) with methyl oleate all gave nitroxides derived from oxidation of ene product . 

Low levels of nitrogen dioxide react with the polyunsaturated fatty acids under anaerobic conditions to give allylic nitro and allylic nitrite derivatives of methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate. These were identified by NICI-MS558.
