Laser Ablation. A mixture of UFPs composed of TiN and Ti was synthesized by laser ablation of titanium in N2 gas at 0.1 MPa using an Nd YAG laser (wavelength 1.06 xm) with peak power of 10 kW for 200-ns pulse (33). This method, however, was not successful in obtaining nitride UFPs of Mo, Al, Fe, and Si. Pure TiN UFPs were produced using a high-power YAG laser generator maximum power of 80 J/pulse, repetition rate of 4-10 pulses/s (34). The particle size of TiN UFPs obtained was about 20 nnr at an ambient N2 gas pressure of 13.3 kPa, and decreased with decreasing N2 gas pressure. AIN UFPs can be synthesized by an excimer laser (12 J/cm2) ablation of aluminum under N2 gas pressure of 10 kPa and the subsequent calcination at 900°C for 2 hr under N2 flow (35). [Pg.414]

There is mass spectroscopic evidence for clusters C59B, C68B2,. ..C54 B6 in the products of laser ablation of boron nitride/graphite composites (Guo et al. 1991). It is proposed that these may be versions of the fullerene cage in which heteroatoms have occupied carbon sites with little disturbance of the framework. This is a plausible hypothesis for low doping ratios, in view of the ability of carbon to substitute for boron in carboranes. Bond-energy considerations suggest that... [Pg.43]

Neutral Ny is (like N5) a radical and so is likewise not expected to be reasonably stable. In an experiment of some relevance to Ny, laser-ablated scandium atoms were codeposited with argon/nitrogen at 10 K (the purpose was to study scandium nitride species) [16]. The reported IR spectra gave no indicahon of the presence of a compound with an Ny ring coordinated to scandium, a compound which has been predicted by computational methods to have a fair chance of existing [17]. [Pg.143]

Recent research work by Museur et al. showed UV-laser-assisted nucleation of boron nitride nanorods from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). Pallets of h-BN powder were used as the target compound for the synthesis and they were subjected to a UV-laser irradiation in their ablation regime for laser pulse duration in picoseconds domain. The ambient gas pressure was kept relatively high (above 500 bar) and oxygen pressure was below 0.2 mbar. The appearance of the nanorods was noticed typically with the pulse duration of 5 ps or shorter. [Pg.503]
