Nitride salt

Lithium is the only alkali metal that reacts with gaseous nitrogen to form a nitride salt containing the N3- anion ... [Pg.872]

Nitride salt a compound containing the N3- anion. (18.2) Nitrogen cycle the conversion of N2 to nitrogen-containing compounds, followed by the return of nitrogen gas to the atmosphere by natural decay processes. (19.2)... [Pg.1106]

Caution The boron nitride salt appears to be thermodynamically unstable since on occasions when the BN-S2O3F2 reaction mixture has been heated to ca. 313 K, detonations have occurred. Moreover boron trifluoride is detectable as a decomposition product of the solid. Glem-ser and his co-workers had previously shown that elemental fluorine converts BN into BF3 and N2 converts it... [Pg.223]

Structural formers (oxides, carbides, nitrides, salts of organic acids, fine-dispersed powders, surfactants) exert an effect on the permolecular structure formation and assist in yielding materials with a given microstructure. A number of powder Cl can be related to active structuring agents. In particular, impregnation of small amounts of fine-dispersed Cl (NDA, G-2, 5-PhTet) in the polymer film materials improves their strength and barrier properties (see Sect. 2.3). [Pg.45]

Mono-, di-, and trivalent bromides and iodides may be made by methods similar to the chlorides. The lower valence salts also disproportionate in water. Indium trifluoride [7783-52-0] InF., is sparingly soluble in water. It forms an ammonium double salt, SNH F TnF. [15273-84-4] which decomposes on heating to indium nitride [25617-98-5] InN. [Pg.81]

Liquid Nitriding. As in gas nitriding, the process is carried out below the austenite region, and hardening is associated with the formation of hard nitrides in the ferrite. Liquid cyanide salts are used with others to provide the source of nitrogen. [Pg.217]

Solid Electrolytes. Of the salt-like nitrides, only Li N has attracted technical interest. Lithium nitride has an uncommonly high ionic... [Pg.57]

Preparation. Hexagonal boron nitride can be prepared by heating boric oxide with ammonia, or by heating boric oxide, boric acid, or its salts with ammonium chloride, alkaU cyanides, or calcium cyanamide at atmospheric pressure. Elemental nitrogen does not react with boric oxide even in the presence of carbon, though it does react with elemental boron at high temperatures. Boron nitride obtained from the reaction of boron trichloride or boron trifluoride with ammonia is easily purified. [Pg.220]

A variety of routes is available for the preparation of metal-thionitrosyl complexes. The most common of these are (a) reaction of nitride complexes with a sulfur source, e.g., elemental sulfur, propylene sulfide or sulfur halides, (b) reaction of (NSC1)3 with transition-metal complexes, and (c) reaction of [SN]" salts with transition-metal complexes. An example of each of these approaches is given in Eq. 7.1,... [Pg.123]

Nitrogen forms binary compounds with almost all elements of the periodic table and for many elements several stoichiometries are observed, e.g. MnN, Mn Ns, Mn3N2, MniN, Mn4N and Mn tN (9.2 < jc < 25.3). Nitrides are frequently classified into 4 groups salt-like , covalent, diamond-like and metallic (or interstitial ). The remarks on p. 64 concerning the limitations of such classifications are relevant here. The two main methods of preparation are by direct reaction of the metal with Ni or NH3 (often at high temperatures) and the thermal decomposition of metal amides, e.g. ... [Pg.417]

Metal nitrides have also been prepared by adding KNH2 to liquid-ammonia solutions of the appropriate metal salts in order to precipitate the nitride, e.g. CU3N, Hg3N2, AIN, TI3N and BiN. [Pg.417]

Salt-like nitrides are exemplified by Li3N (mp 548°C, decomp) and M3N2 (M = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba). It is possible to write ionic formulations of these compounds using the species N though charge separation is... [Pg.417]

Hydrides of the types AnHi (An = Th, Np, Pu, Am, Cm) and AnHs (Pa —> Am), as well as ThaHis (i.e. ThHs.yj) have been so obtained but are not very stable thermally and are decidedly unstable with respect to air and moisture. Borides, carbides, silicides and nitrides (q.v.) are mostly less sensitive chemically and, being refractory materials, those of Th, U and Pu in particular have been studied extensively as possible nuclear fuels.Their stoichiometries are very varied but the more important ones are the semi-metallic monocarbides, AnC, and mononitrides, AnN, all of which have the rock-salt structure they are predominantly ionic... [Pg.1267]

Boron nitride is one of the most outstanding corrosion-resistant materials. It is inert to gasoline, benzene, alcohol, acetone, chlorinated hydrocarbons and other organic solvents. It is not wetted by molten aluminum, copper, cadmium, iron, antimony, bismuth, silicon, germanium, nor by many molten salts and glasses. It is used extensively as crucible material, particularly for molten metals, glasses and ceramic processing. [Pg.442]
