A modified polymer, also called a semisynthetic polymer, is a natural polymer compound treated by a chemical reaction. The world s first man-made polymer material—cellulose nitrate—was made from natural cellulose, such as cotton or cotton cloth, that was treated with concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid. A synthetic polymer is a polymer compound synthesized by small molecular weight compounds through chemical methods. Examples of synthetic polymer materials are plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride and fibers such as polyester, nylon, and other synthetic fibers. 

Cotton "lint , the substance from which cloth is made, is too expensive for use in the explosive industry. It has also been found that these long fibres are much more difficult to nitrate than the shorter and less expensive "linters . Hence the purified "linters constitute the principle source of cellulose for the manufacture of nitrocellulose explosives and plastics (See also under Cotton, Chemical ... 

Solutions characterized by significant local toxicity or staining potential (e.g., silver nitrate) can be instilled using a cotton swab as an applicator.This technique minimizes drop size and subsequent overflow onto the patient s cheek or clothing.
