6-nitrate 3 anomer

The relaxation of certain 13C nuclei in some uronic acids and derivatives is affected by Gd3+. For example, on addition of gadolinium nitrate to solutions of heparin or dermatan sulfate in D20, the C-l and C-6 signals of the uronic acid residues are selectively diminished. This property would be expected from a-L-idopyranosyluronic acid residues, as the C-l and C-6 signals of sodium a-D-idopyranuronate are similarly lessened in intensity, whereas those of the j8 anomer are... 

The insertion of a second oxygen atom in a sugar furanose ring in essence converts that moiety to an acetal. This modiftcation leads to another false substrate for viral reverse transcriptase. Glycosilation of the silylated purine (46-1) with chiral dioxolane (46-2) prepared in several steps from anhydromannose in the presence of ammonium nitrate affords the coupling product as a mixture of anomers (46-3). The mixture of products is then separated on a chromatographic column. The desired diastereomer (46-3) is reacted with ammonia to afford the product (46-4)... 

The only other example of this type of ester was made accidentally in 1935 by Lieser and Leckzyck whilst seeking a means to remove a dithio-carbonyl group specifically. The treatment of methyl 6-0-benzoyl-2-0-[(methylthio)thiocarbonyl]-a-D-glucopyranoside, the anomer of HI (see p. 96), with aqueous silver nitrate caused partial desulfurization to the corresponding mono-0-[(methylthio)carbonyl] ester in 64% yield. 

Azidonitration of the 5-thio-D-xylal 290 with sodium azide in acetonitrile and, subsequently with ceric ammonium nitrate, afforded a separable 1 1 mixture ofthe D-xylo (291) and the D-lyxo derivatives (292). " " They were converted into the corresponding 1-0-acetyl derivatives 293 and 294, on treatment with sodium acetate in acetic acid. In a similar way, azidonitration of 3,4-di-0-bcnzoyl-5-thio-D-ribal (295) afforded a mixture of the corresponding 2-azido-l-O-nilro derivatives that were converted, without separation, into the corresponding 1-O-acetyl derivatives, from which a 3 7 mixture of the a and anomers of 296 could be isolated in 72% y ield.- The steric arrangement of the axially oriented 3-0-benzoyl substituent in the erythro compoimd 295, which in compound 290 occupies an equatorial position, explains the differences found in the addition of the azido group at C-2 of both glycals. 

Incidental to the studies on cellulose nitrate, specifically C-la-beled cotton celluloses were prepared biologically, and some insight into biosynthesis in the cotton boll was obtained. a-D-Glu-copyranosyl phosphate, the anomer of the Cori ester, was synthesized, and a synthetic route to L-iduronic acid was devised both of these products were subsequently found by others to occur naturally.
