Niobium compounds pentafluoride

The most universal method for the synthesis of tantalum and niobium fluoride compounds is based on direct interaction between their pentafluorides, TaF5 or NbFs, and fluorides of other metals. Some physical-chemical properties of these compounds are presented in Table 8 [71, 72]. [Pg.24]

Typical chain-type crystal structure is observed for compounds with the general formula MNbOF4. Table 30 presents cell parameters of tantalum and niobium pentafluorides and of other compounds with X Me = 5. [Pg.86]

Niobium pentafluoride is used in making other fluoro compounds of niobium. [Pg.633]

Pentafluorocthyl iodide is of practical interest, particularly as a precursor of higher perfluoroal-kyl iodides. There are several patents for the preparation of the key compound from tetra-fluoroethene, iodine pentafluoride and iodine at 75-80 C in the presence of catalysts anti-mony(III) fluoride, titanium(lV) chloride, boron trifluoride, vanadium(V) fluoride, niobium(V) fluoride, and molybdenum(Vl) fluoride.11-13 The agents iodine monofluoride" and bromine monofluoride" can add to branched pcrfluoroalkcnes, e.g. perfluoro-2-methylbut-2-ene gives perfluoro-2-iodo-2-methylbutane.1415... [Pg.236]

Niobium Pentafluoride, NbFs, is the only known compound of niobium and fluorine, and even this cannot be obtained in the free state by a wet method because of the extreme readiness with which it hydrolyses. Niobium pentoxide dissolves readily in hydrofluoric acid, but evaporation of the solution leaves a residue of the unchanged oxide. Niobium pentafluoride has been prepared synthetically 1 by passing dry fluorine over the gently heated metal contained in a boat in a platinum tube. The product is freed from platinum tetrafluoride, a little of which is formed at the same time, by distillation in vacuo at 100° to 110° . An alternative method consists in treating niobium pentachloride with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in a freezing mixture and purifying by redistillation.3... [Pg.143]

Double Fluorides of Tantalum Pentafluoride.—When solutions of tantalum pentoxide in hydrofluoric acid are treated with solutions of the fluorides of the alkali (and other) metals, double fluorides are obtained which possess the general formula R F.TaF5, where n usually varies between 1 and 3 in the most important series n=2. These double fluorides are much more stable than tantalum pentafluoride. They were among the first tantalum compounds to recdve examination,5 and still form an important class of tantalum compounds. A study of their isomorphism with the corresponding compounds of niobium... [Pg.188]

The reactivity of polyfluorinated cyclohexadienes toward antimony or niobium pentafluorides has some peculiarities. The equilibrium mixture of 1,4- and 1,3-cyclohexadienes is formed from pure isomers of each and a catalytic amount of MF5 at room temperature where the non-conjugated diene predominates [167], With an excess of SbF5 both isomers disproportionate to give a mixture of aromatic compounds and cyclohexene polyfluoroaromatics and the corresponding cyclohexene [167,168] ... [Pg.85]

The V—F—V angle of 150° in the vanadium pentafluoride structure lies between those for the niobium and rhodium compounds. Thus, the structure cannot be described in terms of either of the close-packed arrangements. Although in the structure some approach toward close-packed planes of fluorine atoms can be seen, a comparison of volume per formula unit for the pentafluorides shows that for the second and... [Pg.105]

Typical examples of compounds that form chain-type structures are simple pentafluorides of tantalum and niobium, TaFs and Nbfs, which were investigated by Edwards [199]. The cry stal structure of NbF< consists of rings made up of four NbF6 octahedrons that are linked by fluorine ligands that are each shared by two neighboring octahedrons, as shown in Pig. 29. The main interatomic distances (in A) are as follows Nb-Nb 5.80, 3.90 and 4.13 Nh-P,(Ki -. 1.75 and 1.78 Nb-Ftal% - 2.06 and 2.07 angle Nl>F[jf d,e-Nh - 182.5°. [Pg.84]
