NIMBY

BCT Best conventional technology NIMBY Not in my back yard... [Pg.2153]

Disposal of radioactive wastes from nuclear reactors has proved to he a serious political problem. The NIMBY syndrome (not in my backyard) applies here. [Pg.526]

Neutron-to-proton ratio, 29-30 Newton, 457,635 Newton, Isaac, 136 Nickel hydroxide, 78 Nicotinic acid, 364-365 NIMBY syndrome, 526 Nitric acid acid rain and, 400 acid strength of, 567 commercial use, 76 copper penny dissolving in, 570 production, 570-571... [Pg.692]

Dimethyl-1-butyne (0.92 mL, 0.62 g, 7.52 mmol) is added to a solution of l methoxy(phenyl)carbene]pentacarbonylchromium (1.56 g, 5.00 nimbi) in tert-butyl methyl etoer (25 mL), and the resulting mixture is stirred at 45 °C under argon for 2 h. Concentration under reduced pressure and column chromatography... [Pg.52]

During the past two years, RECCNTEK has made two attempts to site a facility in California. In both instances, the NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) syndrctne outweighed rational decision making by local communities. REOCNIEK believes, however, that several factors may lead to changes in the outlook for a recycling facility in California. [Pg.309]

This is the not-in-my-back-yard (NIMBY) syndrome, which is a barrier for siting many solid waste facilities. [Pg.81]

However, the NIMBY syndrome cannot always be overcome by the methods described above. Oxford Energy was not successful in launching a plant in the State of New Hampshire. The air quality and waste management permits were granted by the State, but a long court battle with the neighbors followed. After another year and considerable expenditure, Oxford Energy concluded that they would not be allowed to build. [Pg.82]

Incineration is technically the most effective technique in PAH remediation. However, it is cost prohibitive due to associated high excavation, transportation, and heating costs. Dealing with NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) and BANANAs (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything) are major constraints to the use of this technology. Furthermore, future amendments to the Clean Air Act are expected to limit incineration applications to last resort technology. [Pg.2298]

Clear regulations that assign the responsibilities for the new investments, the participation of the stakeholders in the process and the allocation of cost to the network users are of essence in this respect. Moreover, policy makers have to deliver more efforts to fight against the NIMBY ( not in my back yard ) syndrome that often obstructs the building of infrastructures that are so important to improve security of supply. [Pg.298]

People are more willing to accept risk if they are direct recipients of the benefits associated with that risk. The reahty is that most industrial facilities provide little special benefit to the immediate community apart from offering some job opportunities and an increased local tax base. On the other hand, it is the community that has to take all of the associated risk associated with those facilities, thus creating the response of NIMBY ( Not in My Backyard ). [Pg.36]

However, even this procedure has met with much opposition, especially from those living in the vicinity of the repositories. Even though such waste is less dangerous than high-level radioactive waste, the NIMBY philosophy comes into play when the reality of the issue of storage becomes personal. [Pg.310]
