Nimba arishtas

Nimba arishtas (which are commercially available preparations of Azadharichta indica) and the crude water extract of neem have been shown to inhibit both complement pathways as well as activated PMN cells in vitro [58]. Arishtas contain selfgenerated alcohol which increases the shelf life of the preparation. The flowers of Woodfordia fruticosa are added to arishtas for fermentation. It has been reported that addition of these flowers to Nimba arishtas increases its immunomodulatory effects. Interestingly, this activity was not found to be due to microbial interference, but rather to immuno-active constituents released from the flowers [72]. The partially purified leaf extracts of Melia azadharich L. have been reported to reduce mortality induced by Tacaribe viral encephalitis to 15% [73]. This was associated with reduced viral titres and an improved humoral immune response with increased levels of neutralizing antibodies. [Pg.313]
