Fluorine and nitrogen may be added to olefins with the nitrogen in different oxidation states Fluorine and a nilro group are added by reaction of an olefin with nitryl fluoride [131], nitronium tetrafluoroborate [195] (equation 32), or a combination of nitric acid and hydrogen fluoride [131, 196] (equation 33)... [Pg.76]

A frequently occurring problem is the full or partial reduction of a nilro function in the presence of other reducible functions. Preferential hydrogenation of an aromatic nilro group can usually be achieved for it is very easily reduced. [Pg.108]

In general, platinum, with or without modifiers, makes the best catalyst for minimizing dehalogenalion, combined with a fast rate of reduction of the nilro function. Excellent results have been obtained by use of supported noble-metal sulfides (4/). These catalysts [manufactured by Engelhard Industries, Newark, New Jersey (5/)] have a high intrinsic selectivity for this type of reduction and have given excellent results under a wide range of conditions. Elevated temperatures and pressures are necessary to achieve reasonable rates (33,34). [Pg.108]

Benzyl chloride can be converted into benzaldebyde by treatment with nitromethane and base. The reaction involves initial conversion of nilro-methane into its anion, followed by SN2 reaction of the anion with benzyl chloride and subsequent E2 reaction. Write the mechanism in detail, using curved arrows to indicate the electron flow in each step. [Pg.645]

The barium hydroxide catalyzed Henry reaction of 6-deoxy-3-0-methyl-6-nilro-L-ta/r -pyra-nosc (17), generated from l,2-0-isopropylidcnc-3-0-mcthyl-o -D-r/7to-pcntodialdo-1.4-furanose (16), furnishes 5-deoxy-2-GMnethyl-5-nitro-wi o-inositol (18) in 92% yield and 90% purity1 2 3 4 5 6. [Pg.641]

A benzyl carbocation is generated where the substrate has additional substitution stabilising the cationic centre. Thus 4-nilro-isopropylbenzene 6 affords both 4-... [Pg.382]

Uemura and coworkers utilized (R)-binaphthol 85 as chiral ligand in place of DET in association with Ti(IV)/TBHP, which not only mediated the oxidation of sulfides to (R)-configurated sulfoxides, but also promoted the kinetic resolution of sulfoxides (equation 50). In this latter process the two enantiomers of the sulfoxide are oxidized to sulfone by the chiral reagent at different rates, with decrease of the chemical yield, but increase of the ee values. Interestingly, the presence of ortho-nilro groups on the binaphthol ligand lead to the reversal of enantioselectivity with formation of the (5 )-configurated sulfoxide. Non-racemic amino triols and simple 1,2-diols have been successfully used as chiral mediators. [Pg.1097]
