Surface-enhanced near-infrared Raman spectroscopy has been utilized to study the behavior of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide on a gold electrode [303]. It has been found that either adenine or nicotinamide moiety changes its adsorption states during potential scanning.

Surface modification of mesoporous silica gel (average pore diameter 15 nm) by P-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) (Vartzouma et al. 2004) leads to changes in the Si CP MAS NMR spectrum (Figure 1.247). The intensity of Qj and Qi sites decreases because of replacing of the surface H atoms by NAD+. This changes can be used to estimate the adsorption degree of a modifier that is of importance to elucidate the influence of modified surfaces on the interfacial behavior of water or other adsorbates. 

The hydroxyl radicals react with the SAMs and locally change the chemical and physical properties of the monolayer surface. Diaphorase patterns are then formed on the substrates by physical adsorption onto the hydrophobic area or by chemical linkage to the hydroxyl radical-attacked area (Figure 12.30). Diaphorase activity can be visualized using SECM by detecting the diaphorase-catalyzed current of feirocenylmethanol coupled with the oxidation of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (135). The size of the hydroxyl-radical-attacked area, which determines the resolution of the enzyme patterns, is affected by different factors, including the tip size, the concentration of Fe +, and the potential pulse period for generation of the hydroxyl radical.
