C. Welch, C.N. Hughes, R.A. Crawford, and D.W. DuBois, Electroarc-Produced Raney Nickel Alloy-Coated Cathodes for Chlor-Alkali cells. In M.M. Silver and E.M. Spore (eds). Proceedings of Symposium on Advances in the Chlor-Atkali and Chlorate Industry, Vol. 84-11, In The Electrochemical Society Inc., Princeton, NJ (1984), p. 192. [Pg.267]

For example, with nickel-abased alloys, the formation of a nickel oxide film seems to be pre- requisite for obtaining a polished surface a finish of this quality, of 0.2 ym Ra, has been claimed for a Nimonic (nickel alloy) machined in saturated sodium chloride solution. Surface finishes as fine as 0.1 ym Ra have been reported when nick el- chromium steels have been machined in sodium chlorate solution. Again, the formation of an oxide film on the metal surface has been considered to be the key to these conditions of polishing. [Pg.584]

Cathode materials in the first years of chlorate manufacture were copper, nickel, and platinum. Today it is mainly steel, mild steel, or low-carbon steel and in some plants titanium or a Ti-0.2 % Pd alloy [3, 4]. A problem in chlorate electrolysis is the extremely corrosive electrolyte with active chlorine that attacks the steel cathodes when they are not under cathodic protection. This not only shortens the lifetime of the cathodes but also causes problems with pieces of steel in the... [Pg.177]
