Niacin spectra

A. The infrared absorption spectrum of a mineral oil dispersion of the sample, previously dried at 105° for 1 h, exhibits maxima only at the same wavelengths as those of a similar preparation of USP Niacin Reference Standard. 

Niacin is a vitamin, B3, but when taken in doses larger than needed for nutrition, it is the best agent in the world for cholesterol control. Not even prescription drugs come close. That s because niacin affects the entire spectrum in the lipid panel. 

For MRM mode analysis of niacin by IDMS one should be aware of an isotopic effect in the fragmentation of nicotinic add. The natural nicotinic acid daughter spectrum (Figure 19.1b) suggests that the transitions 124 - 80 or 124 78 would be suitable for MRM analysis. The fragment at m/z 80 cor-... 

Niacin has wide spectrum anti-lipid lowering effect as it has shown to decrease LDL-c, triglyceride and Lp(a), and increase HDL.
