The detector array of US-A-5293036 (Santa Barbara Research Center, USA, 08.03.94) achieves a center-surround type output from individual detectors without post-processing the detector signals externally to the array. Each detector of the detector array comprises for this purpose a central radiation absorbing area which is surrounded by a peripheral radiation absorbing area. The center-surround type output signals from the detectors are readily coupled to a neural network signal processor.
