Nephro calcinosis

In some infants receiving parenteral nntrition nephro-calcinosis occnrs. Parenteral nntrition solntions contain the oxalate precnrsors ascorbate and glycine, and in one stndy of very low birth weight infants (111) administration of parenteral nntrition protein of abont 0.5 g/kg/day was associated with an increased nrinary oxalate/creatinine ratio the effect was dose-dependent. Raised nrinary oxalate concentrations may be a factor in the pathogenesis of nephrocalcinosis in these infants.

He detected it in 50 per cent of his patients. Later on Scott et al. (2) related the hyperuricemia mainly to renal failure, and also to a tubular disorder in nephro-calcinosis, a frequent finding in their PHP cases. Posterior series reported by Mallette (3) and Christensson (4) describe a high incidence of hyperuricemia in patients with PHP, a close relation between the levels of calcium and uric acid being observed. However no changes in the uricemia levels were seen after parathyroidectomy.
