Neovascularization in Asthma

Much of our current knowledge regarding neovascularization of the airways during conditions of airway inflammation depends on histologic examination [Pg.368]

A new application of the technique of intravital microscopy to tracheal vessels has been demonstrated in rats (14,15). Shown in Fig. 15.3 is a still image taken from the videotaping of a postcapillary venule of a rat. Several adherent leukocytes are evident. Recruitment in real time can be evaluated, as can alterations in the permeability of different-sized fluorescent dextrans. Vaso-motion as assessed by vessel diameters and red blood cell velocity can also be measured. This in vivo imaging approach can be used for a functional assessment of angiogenic vessels of large airways. [Pg.371]
