Total tetravalent uranium may be precipitated as an insoluble oxalate or fluoride (Grinberg et at., 1957) or in trace amounts co-precipitated for example with neodymium fluoride (cf. Pu ). Such a procedure can be used to show whether uranium is present in the lower oxidation state, for example, in anoxic waters because hexavalent uranium does not co-precipitate in this way. [Pg.370]

Principle of Separation. Thorium co-precipitates with NdF3 while U02+ remains in solution. Filter paper with the neodymium fluoride precipitate and associated thorium is mounted on a planchet and counted for alpha and beta particles. The presence of alpha particles in the NdF3 precipitate indicates the amount of uranium that accompanies the precipitate unless 230Th is present. The ratio of the beta-particle count rate in the precipitate to the count rate in the initial sample of uranium with 234Th and 234mPa indicates the fractional yield of the co-precipitation process. [Pg.53]

Other types of co-precipitation are used in the preparation of samples for analysis. For example, cerium(IV) hydroxide, cerium(III) fluoride, and neodymium fluoride can be used to prepare sources for alpha spectrometry (see below). LaFs co-precipitation is used in the preparation of samples for uranium measurement by neutron activation analysis (see below). [Pg.4159]

The structure of the trivalent neodymium fluoride species in the melt is the octahedral [NdFfi] complex anion identified by Raman spectroscopy [13]. The dissolution of Nd203 results in the formation of neodymium oxyfluorides in the melts. It also has been found that the [NdOFs]" is present [10]. Actually, [NdFe] and [NdOFs]" " coexist in the melt since the concentration of NdF3 is much... [Pg.1770]
