Many technological applications of liquid crystals, as in electro-optic display devices, are based on multicomponent mixtures. Such systems offer a route to the desired material properties which cannot be achieved simultaneously for single component systems. Mixtures also tend to exhibit a richer phase behaviour than pure systems with features such as re-entrant nematic phases [3] and nematic-nematic transitions possible. In this section, we describe simulations which have been used to study mixtures of thermotropic calamitic mesogens. [Pg.121]

For example, the nematic phase formed by calamitic systems is optically positive and uniaxial, with the optical axis along n. In the absence of an external field, the two directions, n and —n are, however, indistinguishable. The nematic phase, formed by the disc-shaped mesogens, is denoted by ND to distinguish it from the one formed by the calamitic systems. Similar to the phase transition from nematic to isotropic phase induced by azobenzene molecules, the trans-cis isomerization also destabilize the SmC phase composed of calamitic mesogens and lower the Curie point, which is a transition temperature where the SmC will transform from ferroelectric to non-ferroelectric. Some examples have been reported with an early demonstration by Ikeda et al. [130-135]. For example, a photoresponsive SmC was formulated by doping 3 mol % of 4,4 -disubstituted azobenzene 29 into a FLC host 27 and the UV irradiation at 260 nm resulted in the lowering of Curie point and the coercive force Ec required to switch the SSFLC due to the destabilization of bent shape cis isomers [130] (Fig. 5.23). When the electric field was close to Ec before irradiation, the flip of polarization of SmC was achieved. It is noteworthy that its response time 500 ps is much faster than normally observed for photochemical N-I phase transitions [131]. [Pg.160]

The chemical shifts allowed the local order parameters to be computed which indicated the uniaxial to biaxial nematic phase transition. The nematic phase of a deuterated fiuorenone nematogen has been studied by NMR and X-ray and evidence for biaxial order close to its glass transition temperature has been inferred. The possible symmetries of the biaxial nematic phase have been examined based on experimental results and it is concluded that a monoclinic symmetry rather than an orthorhombic symmetry that is more likely to be the cause for the observed phase biaxiality in thermotropic bent-core and calamitic-tetrapode nematic systems.
