For teachers, I think it is important to provide students with guidance. For this class, I provided students with one way (there are many) to identify a target for synthesis. I chose a method that was well-defined and was manageable within the context of a course (I directed students to the website of the journal Heterocycles for a searchable compilation of natural product structures). I provided students with help navigating the website, feedback on their target selection, and also provided feedback on their synthesis plan at an intermediate point in the course.
