Natural Products Probably Related to the Aromatic Amino Acids 

In higher organisms the number of products derived from the aromatic amino acids is comparatively small. In lower organisms, such as bacteria and plants, the biosynthetic possibilities are enormously greater. In this section very brief mention will be made of some types of compound probably metabolically related to the aromatic amino acids. 

This applies especially to substances such as the essential oils or lignin. The comparatively small amount of tvork so far done on the biogenesis of alkaloids from isotopically labeled amino acids suggests that theories of biogenesis of alkaloids from amino acids are probably justified.
