Natural computation

Some natural processes and principles have stimulated researchers to develop algorithms that imitate concepts of nature and are, therefore, summarized under the name natural computation (Kateman [1990] Lucasius [1994]). The most prominent methods are ... [Pg.142]

Variable selection is an optimization problem. An optimization method that combines randomness with a strategy that is borrowed from biology is a technique using genetic algorithms—a so-called natural computation method (Massart et al. 1997). Actually, the basic structure of GAs is ideal for the purpose of selection (Davis 1991 Hibbert 1993 Leardi 2003), and various applications of GAs for variable selection in chemometrics have been reported (Broadhurst et al. 1997 Jouan-Rimbaud et al. 1995 Leardi 1994, 2001, 2007). Only a brief introduction to GAs is given here, and only from the point of view of variable selection. [Pg.157]

Once we have established what a hydrogen bond is and its relative position within the possible intermolecular bonds, we can focus our attention in the forms conventionally used to identify its presence. Besides the direct criteria described before as part of defining its nature (compute the energy of the interaction and search for a H- - -X bond critical point in the A-H- - -X... [Pg.201]

Data federation systems with query interfaces do allow the human being to extract the knowledge using the invaluable natural computer between his or her ears, but the veritable tsunami of data that is starting to pour in exhausts the number of experts and the time that they have to do such a chore. [Pg.325]
