The Prohibition Act caused the sulphite alcohol programme to be scaled down. At first only one of the six alcohol plants under construction was completed, and over 2 million litres of ethyl alcohol had to be imported annually. The army and the Economic Defence Council demanded national self-sufficiency in ethyl alcohol and the supply of liquid fuels in case of crisis, and the production of sulphite alcohol was substantially expanded between 1932 and 1941. Eventually the annual total capacity of the seventeen factories rose to over 31,000 tonnes of sulphite alcohol, expressed in terms of 100 per cent alcohol. ... [Pg.354]
