Finally, 5(4Ff)-oxazolones react as masked 1,3-dipoles with nitrileimines, l-nitroso-2-naphthol and [60]fullerene to give 1,2,4-triazoles, naphth[l,2-ci oxazoles and 5 -phenyl-2 7/-pyrrolo[3, 4 l,2][60]fullerene, respectively. 

The first example of the corresponding reaction with a p-tolyl-substituted heterocycle was that of 2-(p-tolyI)naphth[l,2-[Pg.222]

Some synthetic lapachol derivatives have also showed cytotoxic activity. Burton et al have prepared mono(arylimino) derivatives of P-lapachone. Some of these derivatives had good scores with net cell kills in preliminary in vivo testing hollow fiber assays against a standard panel of 12 human tumor cell lines [160].Twelve substituted 1,4-naphthoquinones were tested against the ascitic form of sarcoma 180 in Swiss mice. Statistical analysis showed that the most important molecular parameter determining their effectiveness in prolonging the life of mice bearing this tumor is their redox potentials [161]. This study showed37 that irradiation of aerated toluene solutions (10 3 A/) of these three photochromes yielded common products from the heterocyclic moiety, namely, 3,3-dimethyl- and 1,3,3-trimethyloxindole (13 and 14) and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2,3-dioxo-4,4-dimcthylquinolinc (265). From degradation of the chro-mene moiety, three products were formed 5-N02-vanillin (266), 1-formyl-p-napthol (267), and naphth[l,2-d]oxazole (268). 

Katritzky and co-workers found that either 452 or 453 was cyclodehydrated in refluxing SCXTla to produce AT-diethyl-2-phenyl-naphth[l,2-if]oxazole-5-suIfon-amide 454 (Scheme 1.124).
