Nanotechnology concerns about

Insurers have always tried to find a balance between safety and risks (Hartlief 2009). They too are concerned about new risks such as electromagnetic fields and nanotechnology. What more can they do to help weigh up opportunities and threats, both for individual businesses and in the political and public debate The financial sector could play a larger role as a partner in the proposals, initiatives and activities mentioned in Chapter 3. [Pg.64]

In 2008, the ACTU joined a broad coalition of civil society, public interest, environmental and labor organizations concerned about various aspects of nanotechnology s human health, environmental, social, ethical, and other impacts by signing an international declaration called the Principles for the Oversight of Nanotechnologies and Nanomaterials (NanoAction, 2007). By signing the declaration the ACTU committed to eight principles. [Pg.54]

With advances in nanotechnology, quantum dots are ubiquitous in surfaces with myriad applications in electrochemistry. In this chapter, we discuss the numerical modelling of quantum dots both the spherically symmetric (metal or semiconductor) dots embedded in a matrix (usually a dielectric) and the hemispherical metal dots (a.k.a. nanoparticles or thin-film islands) supported by a substrate (again, usually a dielectric). We are particularly concerned about the optical properties of quantum dots, since the interaction of light with quantum dots is used widely for several applications in surface electrochemistry - from characterization of the thickness and quality of thin films, to the development of surface sensors - as well as in nanoelectronics and quantum computing. [Pg.114]

Nanotechnology generally concerns the manipulations of objects from i to 100 nanometers (nm) in scale. For perspective, a DNA molecule is about 2.0 nm wide, and a water molecule is only about 0.2 nm. Like microtechnology, nanotechnology is interdisciplinary, requiring the... [Pg.104]

Various nanotechnologies used in fabrication and manufacturing have been around for several years now and there is currently very little disagreement about the potential benefits that could be realized by their increasing implementation in industry. However, one major area of concern in the application of nanotechnologies in manufacturing is the subsequent potential compromise of worker health and safety due to airborne nanoparticles produced during their application. [Pg.255]
