Nanocrystal Synthesis structures

The chapters in this volume present detailed insights into the synthesis-structure-properties relationships of nanostructured materials. In particular, the catalytic and photocatalytic properties of nanoclusters and nanostructured materials with ultrahigh surface-to-volume ratio are demonstrated. The gas absorption characteristics and surface reactivity of nanoporous and nanocrystalline materials are shown for various separation and reaction processes. In addition, the structural manipulation, quantum confinement effects, transport properties, and modeling of nanocrystals and nanowires are described. The biological functionality and bioactivity of nanostructured ceramic implants are also discussed.

The synthesis of Pt nanocrystals with controlled morphology must have interesting applications in practice, since the catalytic activity for structure-sensitive reactions depends on the orientation of the crystalline facets. Using the obtained morphologically controlled Pt nanoparticles, Pt/Al203 catalysts were prepared and applied for a structure-sensitive reaction, i.e., NO reduction by CH4. 

This first example of the utility of quadrupolar nuclei as sources of information about nano-semiconductors showed that MAS-NMR could identify a poly type that is unstable in the bulk. A second example will show that information about changes in the electronic structure of nanocrystals as a function of synthesis and treatment conditions, as well as information about different polytypes, can be obtained via measurement of Knight shifts and chemical shifts. Besides gold nanocrystals of spherical shape, elongated structures such as nanorods are the second most studied ones. Their first synthesis was reported in 2001233 and since then this synthetic procedure has been widely studied and improved. Nonetheless, the influence of various parameters such as the presence of seeds, the nature of the solvent, and the presence of surfactants on the reaction yield and the control of shape make the reproducibility of this synthesis still a challenging task.234-237...
