Ethers may be thought of as derivatives of alcohols in which the hydroxy proton has been replaced by an alkyl group. We now introduce this class of compounds systematically. This section gives the rules for naming ethers and describes some of their physical properties. [Pg.339]

The lUPAC system for naming ethers treats them as alkanes that bear an alkoxy substituent— that is, as alkoxyalkanes. The smaller substituent is considered part of the alkoxy group and the larger chain defines the stem. [Pg.339]

In common names, the names of the two alkyl groups are followed by the word ether. Hence, CH3OCH3 is dimethyl ether, CH3OCH2CH3 is ethyl methyl ether, and so forth. [Pg.339]
