Corms and seeds are a sonrce for the alkaloid colchicine, which inhibits cell division, that is, cancer. The side effects are severe, negating its use against cancer, althongh it is sometimes nsed against gout. Also called naked lady, autumn saffron. 

Their occurrence is limited to the Liliaceae, e. g., Col-chicum, Kreysigia, anAAndrocymbium species (see table). They are readily soluble in water, chloroform, and ethanol. Colchicine is one of the few natural tropolone derivatives, see, e. g., fomentariol. It occurs together with other, structurally related alkaloids (colchamine, colchicoside, colchiceine, colchiciline, colchifoline) in meadow saffron (autumnal crocus, naked lady, Col-chicum aummnale). At the end of the 1930s, with the alkaloid colchicine [303] from the autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale, also known as the meadow safifon or naked lady) the first natural product was discovered, which attacks the spindle apparatus. Whereas colchicine and the Vinca alkaloids interfere with the polymerisation of tubulins, taxanes and epothilone inhibit their depolymerisation. 

Trix broke through the surface of the lake and breathed in the warm Paraiso air.
