Nacella concinna

Kim D (2001) Seasonality of marine algae and grazers of an Antarctic rocky intertidal, with emphasis on the role of the limpet Nacella concinna Strebel (Gastropoda Patellidae). Berichte zur Polar- und Meeresforschung 397 1-120... [Pg.102]

At Potter Cove, there are some molluscs that meet the prerequisites to be considered as a useful biomonitor, such as the clam Laternula elliptica and the gastropod Nacella concinna. [Pg.172]

Laternula elliptica, one of the largest bivalves in the Antarctic marine environment, has been proposed as a biomonitor of trace metals in coastal waters (67, 70). Although gastropod molluscs have been less extensively used for monitoring trace metals pollution that mollusc bivalves, they show eharacteristics useful for these studies (61). The limpet Nacella concinna is the most abundant and often the only invertebrate found in the littoral zone of the Antarctic peninsula. [Pg.172]

The relatively high level of Cd found in Nacella concinna with respect to Later-nula elliptica may be due to its longevity or to the presence of metallothioneins involved in the mechanism of Cd detoxification in the muscle tissue (26, 72, 73). [Pg.173]
