Most of the studies of the interaction between metallic iron and organic monosulfides or disulfides are based on the premise that the rate of formation of iron sulfides (FeS, FeS2) is a valid measure of additive reactivity. This was the premise used by Dorinson and Broman [24] in their comparison of the reactivities of di-t-octyl disulfide and di-n-octyl disulfide with iron powder. The kinetic data for 25% of additive in white oil fitted the following equations ...

The highest ee s (85-90%) were observed for TBHP oxidation of sulfides with general formula Me—S—(aryl). There is generally a decrease in the ee when methyl group is replaced by a more sterically demanding one such as Pr" or Bu (e.g. entry 2, Table 1.2). However, cyclopropyl—S—Ph is an excellent substrate for sulfoxidation (95% ee, entry 6). Dialkyl sulfides such as Me—S—Bu or Me—S—(n-octyl) gave ee s in the range of 55% (entries 7,8). 

Second generation products were mixed mono-/di-alkyl tin long-chain mercaptans. The stabilizer is synthesized directly from an appropriate combination of mono-n-butyltin trichloride and di-n-butyltin dichloride, which is reacted with a suitable quantity of /-octyl mercaptoacetate and sodium sulfide. Although the tin content in the stabilizer is increased to about 22%, these products are often used in diluted form to aid in their handling, while reducing losses.
