Multiplicity, definition

Serious adverse reactions. Multiple definitions are possible and no single one is correct in all situations. In general usage referring to patients in clinical trials, a serious adverse reaction may be (1) any bad adverse reaction that is observed, (2) any bad adverse reaction that one does not expect to observe, (3) any bad adverse reaction that one does not expect to observe and is not on the label, or (4) any bad adverse reaction that has not been reported with standard therapy. Definitions also may be based on the degree to which an adverse reaction compromises a patient s function or requires treatment. [Pg.995]

A term may be followed by multiple definitions, each introduced by a boldface number ... [Pg.440]

We have referred to quasi-Newton methods rather than the quasi-Newton method because there are multiple definitions that can be used for the function F in this expression. The details of the function F are not central to our discussion, but you should note that this updating procedure now uses information from the current and the previous iterations of the method. This is different from all the methods we have introduced above, which only used information from the current iteration to generate a new iterate. If you think about this a little you will realize that the equations listed above only tell us how to proceed once several iterations of the method have already been made. Describing how to overcome this complication is beyond our scope here, but it does mean than when using a quasi-Newton method, the convergence of the method to a solution should really only be examined after performing a minimum of four or five iterations. [Pg.71]

As both the textbook and research literature amply document, resonance energy (RE) (and therefore stabilization) has multiple definitions. For simple enamines , we accept a customary model in which RE is the difference of enthalpies of formation of (otherwise analogous) conjugated and unconjugated species. There are but two pairs of compounds... [Pg.259]

Inclusive branching fractions have a multiplicity definition and can be greater than 100%. [Pg.1778]

The use of multiple definitions and models. This issue implies the need for indicating explicitly the limitations of the validity of the models, and the type of models, that are used. [Pg.330]

In the past twenty-five years, the field of diversity and inclusion has become more sophisticated, both in its definitions and in articulating what the terms really mean. But multiple definitions of this burgeoning and complex discipline still abound, often leading to confusion and even controversy. As I pointed out in a prior review, [djiversity has evolved into a rather amorphous field, where the very word itself invokes a variety of different meaninsrs and emotional responses (Anand Sc Winters, 2008, p. 356). [Pg.205]

A group is defined as a collection of elements (in the case of symmetry groups, symmetry operations) that are related to each other by a given set of rules. Group theory allows us to apply manipulations such as multiplication, definition of subgroups and classes, etc. [Pg.83]

Chemists have been working for many years to sort out what specifically makes something an acid or a base. Through this work, multiple definitions of acids and bases have been proposed. As we explain in Chapter 5, there are two important models for examining acid-base chemistry ... [Pg.12]

It is important to understand how resolution and resolving power are used in reporting mass spectrometric data. The terms resolution and resolving power are defined in some pubhshed lists as they are above, while in others the definitions are reversed. On occasion, the two terms are used interchangeably. Having multiple definitions can be confusing. [Pg.25]

Let us start by covering an issue that impacts the safety culture, namely the definition of safety. The assumption is made that everyone understands the term safety , but that is not necessarily the case. If a safety culture is to be sustained or developed, a mutually agreed upon definition is needed for the term safety . While this may seem to be unnecessary, a second look shows that after all these years, a clear concise definition is still debated and discussed. If an organization is working with multiple definitions or vague concepts, then the potential for improving the safety culture is reduced. [Pg.4]

The following are explanations and definitions of terms commonly encountered by the infrared thermographer. Many of these terms have multiple definitions and the one provided is the one most applicable to infrared thermography. NOTE In some cases, the textbook definition of a term is replaced by one more explicitly dealing with the praetiee of infrared thermography. [Pg.155]

Finally, in order to avoid multiple definitions of the same terms we have added a brief glossary and also an index that allows one to look up specific topics. [Pg.3]
