M.B. Schenker of Institute of Toxicology, University of California Davis in Davis, California is leading a multidisciplinary study supported by National Cancer Institute (NCI). This study will examine whether environmental asbestos deposits in California are associated with increased rates of mesothelioma. The study will address geological occurrence of asbestos and potential human exposure based on population patterns and known occupational exposure, and epidemiological characteristics of the disease in the state. The project will plan a case-control study to rigorously test the hypothesis that mesothelioma in California is independently associated with environmental asbestos exposure.

For the past 4 years, in connection with multidisciplinary studies of remote sensing, we have measured the spectra of light attenuation and fluorescence of particulate matter collected from the world s oceans (5). The number of fluorescent cells for many of the open ocean areas is so low that technical problems quickly occurred in the attempt to obtain monochromatic spectra of light emission and absorption. Furthermore, when the cells are placed in cuvettes they tend to settle out therefore, spurious results are obtained. To overcome these problems we elected to concentrate the cellular particles on membrane filters, which in turn were mounted in the light path of a conventional spectrofluorometer. It is with these ideas that the 12th Camerino-Noord-wijkerhout Symposium has seen us into the third millennium with an awareness that the only success for converting our hopes into reality is a multidisciplinary study based on a wakeful and critical comparison between experiences that have been reaching maturity through different approaches to the problematic - as has always been the case in our Symposia.
