The polysialic acid units are linear polymers of up to at least 55 or more sialic acid residues [48]. They appear to be bound by an a-2,3-linkage to a galactose residue in an N-linked glycan (Fig. 2) [45]. A complete core structure has not yet been determined, but the structural analyses performed suggest N-linked structures, mainly multi- (tri- and tetra-) antennary structures [45]. [Pg.62]
