Muche, Georg

Early twenty-first-century historians of alchemy and chemistry now have demonstrated how much alchemical ideas were involved in the early modern experimental science of the seventeenth century, including that of Boyle himself, as well as Newton and George Starkey. Starkey was an experimental chemist who was the author of the important alchemical text The Marrow of Alchemy (1654-55), published under the name Eirenaeus Philoponus Philalethes, and held to be of great alchemical importance by Waite and Golden Dawn alchemists. See Newman and Principe 2004, and Principe 1998. [Pg.224]

Ed is a 38-year-old EAP caseworker and this Wednesday afternoon is visited by George, who tells Ed that his wife is tired of his smoking marijuana. George makes it clear that he does not smoke at work or on the premises, but admitted that he may smoke too much from time to time on the weekends and with friends after hours during the week. George tells Ed he just wants to get his wife off his back and does not know what the big deal is after all, he works hard for the family and she should appreciate his efforts rather than complaining about how he relaxes. However, he promised his wife that he would stop by and see an EAP representative. [Pg.104]

A dry cell is a galvanic cell with the electrolyte contained in a paste thickened with starch. This cell is much more portable than the Daniell cell. The first dry cell, invented by the French chemist Georges Leclanche in 1866, was called the Leclanche cell. [Pg.512]

As described above, efficient peroxidase catalysis requires rapid reaction of the enzyme with H2O2 coupled with the formation of a discrete compound I species. As initially observed by George and Irvine in 1952 (177), the reaction of metMb with H2O2 is much slower than the corresponding reaction of peroxidases. The myoglobin derivative produced by this reaction was referred to by these authors as ferryl myoglobin... [Pg.22]

Much of the data manipulation and some of the graphics were the work of Mrs. Linda Lew. Dr. Brian Vinyard assisted with some of the statistical analyses, and James Wadsworth provided a program for fitting a gaussian curve. Professors David Brant and George Jeffrey provided helpful comments on the manuscript. Mention of commercial products and their vendors is not an endorsement by the... [Pg.139]
