Mount Cook

Mount Cook is one of undifferentiated space. Following their on-site experiences people move towards an organised mapping of subplace experiences that are symbolically connected to a deepening sense of appreciation and care for the environment. [Pg.183]

Detectors should not be mounted near windows, exterior doors, or other places where drafts might direct the smoke away from the unit. Nor should they be placed in kitchens and garages, where cooking and gas fumes are likely to cause false alarms. [Pg.56]

Because of the dead air space that might be missed by turbulent hot air above a fire, smoke detectors should be installed either on the ceiling at least four inches from the nearest wall, or high on a wall at least four, but no further than 12 inches from the ceiling. Detectors should not be mounted near windows, exterior doors, or other places where drafts might direct the smoke away from the unit. Nor should they be placed in kitchens and garages, where cooking and gas fumes are likely to set off false alarms. [Pg.274]

At 8840 meters above sea level, on the top of Mount Everest, the atmospheric pressure is about 34 kPa (0.34 atm). At this pressure, water boils at about 72 °C, and as we have just learned, the water remains at that temperature until all of it has boiled away. The potatoes will take much longer to cook at this temperature, which is 28 °C lower than the normal boiling temperature. If we could heat the water in a pressure cooker, however, the pressure above the water could increase to higher than the atmospheric pressure, causing the boiling point of the water to increase. For example, water boils at about 120 °C when the pressure above the water is 202 kPa (2 atm). Potatoes cook much faster at this temperature (Figure 14.14). [Pg.545]

Explain why potatoes take longer to cook in boiling water on the top of Mount Everest than at sea level and why they cook faster in water boiled in a pressure cooker. [Pg.562]

The EVOLUTION mechanical dilator sheath set (Cook Vascular) is composed of an inner plastic sheath with a threaded metal tip and an outer telescoping polymer sheath. The inner sheath has a stainless steel tip at its distal end, and no electrical energy supply is required. This sheath is mounted on a pistol capable of mechanically rotating the sheath. Multiple sheath sizes are available 7 F, 9 F, 11 F, and 13 F. A shortle version, with a shorter sheath length, is also available. Although this sheath has the capability of dissecting through all types of tissues, even calcified adhesions, there are only limited experiences reported in literature [20, 21], and some complications related to this tool are described [22] (Fig. 4.13). [Pg.65]

Suppose you were on top of Mount Everest and wanted to cook a potato as quickly as possible. You left your microwave oven at home, so you could either boil the potato in water or throw it into a campfire. Explain which method you would use and why. [Pg.241]
