Motive power batteries charging

Taper charging of lead-acid motive power batteries... 

Motive power, engine cranking, and stationary batteries require cleaning, watering, and charging. When cleaning, electrolyte on the cell covers or connectors should be neutralized and rinsed to prevent corrosion and shorting. Water that is approved for batteries or distilled... 

Applications for this type of battery include motive power for industrial trucks, tractors and mine locomotives, and also electric vehicles. An energy density of 50Wh/kg has been achieved. Electric vehicles have achieved a range of 200 km on a single charge and the batteries are currently achieving cycle lives of 1000—2000 cycles. 

Chloride Motive Power also offer two devices for the automatic topping up of cells. Such devices are important as accurate topping up will prolong battery life and remove the risk of abuse. Automatic topping up also assists, of course, in the sense that it is an important aspect of automation in battery charging and maintenance operations. 

The Chloride Motive Power Battopper (Figures 50.1 and 50.2) is fitted with control logic to prevent overfilling and is self-powered by a maintenance-free battery. The system is continually monitored for faults. It is suitable for use for approximately 5 h between charges. 

Contrary to hybrid vehicles, a full battery electric vehicle relies on the battery for all motive force and is not assisted by an internal combustion engine. But it otherwise shares many of the characteristics of the plug-in hybrid vehicle battery—the need to accept regenerative braking as a charging mechanism, while also charging from a stationary power line.
