Mother pitch

When the mesophase pitch is heated, tiny spherical beads having a radial orientation of the graphite embryo form and grows in the mother pitch. When the size of the beads in the pitch reaches an appropriate size (10-30 pm), the pitch is cooled down and the beads can be collected by dissolving the pitch matrix with an appropriate solvent. The beads are then heat-treated in an oxygen/water gas mixture to produce the protective skin, as for the MCF, and then graphitized, as depicted in Figure 10. 

In the book of Exodus (Chapter 2) we read that the mother of Moses when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bullrushes and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein and she laid it in the flags by the river s brink . Biblical commentaries indicate that slime is the same as bitumen but whether or not this is so we have here the precursor of our modem fibre-reinforced plastics boat. 

A neonatal withdrawal syndrome has been described, with verification by the detection of pentazocine and its metabolites in the urine of both mother and baby. Within 4 hours of birth the child was irritable, jittery, and hypertonic, with a high-pitched cry, a voracious appetite, and frequent bowel movements. The symptoms improved over 3 days. The mother had abused parenteral pentazocine (23-46 mg) for the previous 10 years and injected the last dose of 46 mg some 10 hours before dehvery (10). 

An ineffective pitch introduces the topic but not the story, as in "This is a film about the ethics of genetic testing and about how some people face hard choices." An effective pitch does both. "This is a film about genetic testing in which we follow an actress making the tough decision about whether to be tested for the disease that claimed her mother s life." The pitch works because it compels the listener to ask follow-up questions What will she do if the test is positive Will she let you follow her through the process What if she doesn t take the test ...
