Morphogenesis, defined

The design of exoreceptors requires a means of generating defined external molecular shapes. This may be achieved by the stepwise synthesis of molecular architectures via covalent bond formation (covalent or molecular morphogenesis). The polymerization of oriented systems in molecular assemblies may also serve this end [7.10]. 

Systems-level approaches were defined more than 60 years ago with the application of general systems theory to various scientific fields including chemistry and life sciences with emphasis on morphogenesis (von Bertalanffy 1968 Friboulet and Thomas 2005). In the sixties, concepts derived from Ilya Prigogine s dissipative structures theory were also applied to biochemical oscillation and morphogenesis (Friboulet and Thomas 2005). In the seventies, numerical analyses of biochemical systems were developed which could represent a first step into modem systems biology (Hammer et al. 2004 Aderem 2005).

Many recent comprehensive reviews describe the molecular basis of some aspects of development [2-6]. Vegetative haploid or diploid amoebae complete a well-defined and synchronous morphogenesis program in 24 h. Each 10 -cell organism undergoes a dozen morphological transitions to make at least 4 different cell types including spores.
