Other modifications to the reaction conditions of the Brust-Schiffrin method, such as a reduction temperature of — 78 °C and the use of a hyperexcess of hexanethiol, results in an Au38(thiolate)24, based on observations, LDI-TOF mass spectrometry, TGA analysis and elemental analysis [69]. The influence of preparation temperature on the size and monodispersity of dodecylthiol monolayer protected gold clusters has also been reported. Both and SAXS measurements show that higher temperatures increase polydispersity. This modification of poly-dispersity may be related to the existence of a dynamic exchange of thiols at the particle surface with thiols in the solvent [70]. [Pg.145]

In a recent report, 19- or 20-residue thiolated oligonucleotides were used in an exchange reaction with glutathione monolayer-protected gold clusters. After thiol substitution, the resulting DNA-nanoparticle conjugates can be separated by gel electrophoresis on the basis of the number of bound oligonucleotides and assembled with one another by DNA-DNA hybridization [151]. [Pg.164]

In 2002, the group of Rolinson [21] reported the use of gold-titania composite aerogels for room temperature oxidation of carbon monoxide. Alkanethiolate monolayer-protected gold clusters with a well controlled size distribution were added to the Ti(IV) precursor during the sol-gel chemistry. After calcination the Au particles aggregate to average diameters of 5-10 nm. [Pg.167]

Nanometer-sized monolayer-protected gold clusters functionalized with anthraquinone by using l-(l,3-dithiapropyl)anthracene-9,10-dione were used to mediate electroreduction of 1,1-dinitrocyclohexane [54a]. The enhancement in catalytic efficiency for cluster-bound anthraquinone compared to its monomer was ascribed to the smaller diffusion coefficient of the cluster-bound... [Pg.620]

The type II reaction of p-alkylalkanophenones in n-butyl stearate has been studied. The E/C ratio in the reaction depends on the length of their two-alkyl chains. The type II elimination occurs exclusively from alkyl aryl ketones on monolayer protected gold clusters (Scheme 6). Although the ketones are not... [Pg.1095]
