One long-term objective of this research is to utilize the finest attributes associated with the worlds of both biological and synthetic materials to create nanomechanical systems powered by biological motors. Important fields of application include miniaturized (nanofluidic) analytical systems,131 molecular sorting,132 controlled adaptation of materials on a molecular to mesoscopic scale,133 and engineering lipid and polymer membrane systems with cellular processes.134...

Molecular sorting. Molecular sorting involves the complete destruction of the physical structure of the plastic article prior to separation of the resins. Such systems typically use dissolution in solvents and reprecipitation, using either a single solvent at multiple temperatures or combinations of solvents. Because of the use of organic solvents and, consequently, the need to control emissions and to recover the solvents, costs of such systems tend to be high. There is also a concern about residual solvent in the recovered polymer, and its tendency to leach into products. There are at present no commercial systems using this approach.

There has been little success in using molecular sorting for separation of plastics. Such systems typically use dissolution in one or more organic solvents, and the need to control emissions and to recover the solvents results in high costs. Residual solvent in the recovered plastics is also a concern.
