Molecular diagnostics, photonic

In addition to custom design of photonic proteins, which normally requires site-specific modifications at particular internal residues, TRAMPE can be used to incorporate photonic moieties at nonspecific positions, such as at random lysine residues or only at the N-terminal position of a protein. This approach can be useful in the fields of gene expression, proteomics, and even medical molecular diagnostics. For example, fluorescent labels can be used to monitor in vitro or even in vivo expression of proteins, to build arrays of proteins with which to detect specific protein-protein or drug-protein interactions, and even to detect genetic defects, which are expressed on the protein leveL... 

Biomedical photonics has the potential to revolutionize medicine as we know it, especially by application of nanotechnology and nanomaterials, leading to diagnostics and therapy at the molecular level. 

Recently, nanotechnology and nanomaterials have been revolutionizing important areas in biomedical photonics, especially diagnostics and therapy at the molecular and cellular levels. Once again, inorganic species offer unique possibilities for practical applications. 

The mission of the Center is to apply photonics-based technologies and expertise to important needs in the biosciences and medicine. As examples consider some of the grand challenges of those fields in vitro cellular imaging at the molecular level of resolution, development of non-invasive medical diagnostics and therapies, surgery at the cellular level of precision.
