Therefore, the concentration of macroradicals builds up asymptotically to its maximum steady-state concentration. Margerison and East analyzed this equation for the polymerization of styrene, in benzene solvent, with 2,2 -diazobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and [I]o = 1 x 10" moir. For these conditions, taking fet=7.2 x 10 morMs" the maximum (i.e., steady-state) value of [R"]max= 1-8 x 10 moir is reached in a few seconds. Thus, first [R ] increases and when the concentration becomes large enough, the rate of initiation buildup becomes equal to the rate of bimolecular termination and the steady state is reached.
