Between any two bipolar plates providing reactant access, a multilayer MEA is set up that consists of a positive electrode and a negative electrode pressed into the two sides of a proton-conducting membrane. For reasons discussed in Section 3.4, the catalyst for the hydrogen electrode in a PEMFC is a mixed platinum-ruthenium catalyst that applied to carbon black. The overall thickness of a modem MEA is about 0.5 to 0.6 mm (of which approximately 0.1 mm each is for the membrane, the two gas-diffusion layers, and the two active layers). The bipolar plates are about 1.5 mm thick, with the channels on both sides having a depth of about 0.5 mm. [Pg.48]

Key words membrane reactors, mixed ionic-electronic conductors (MIECs), perovskite, oxygen permeable membrane, proton conducting membrane. [Pg.271]
