BP Exploration and Production Inc was the lease operator of Mississippi Canyon Block 252 in the Gulf of Mexico, which contains the Macondo prospect. Geological data indicated that there might be a significant oil and gas reservoir deep below the seabed in this block. BP had minority partners in this venture, Anadarko (25%) and MOEX (10%).
