Tetracyclines. It is important to give the tetracyclines on an empty stomach tetracyclines are not to be taken with dairy products (milk or cheese). The exceptions are doxycycline (Vibramycin) and minocycline (Minocin), which may be taken with dairy products or food. The nurse should give clindamycin with food or a full glass of water. The nurse can give troleandomycin and clarithromycin without regard to meals. All tetracyclines should be given with a full glass of water (240 mL). 

The tetracycline antibiotic minocycline (Minocin) is modestly effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and is generally well tolerated. Radiographic evidence of its efficacy as a DMARD is lacking, although clinical symptoms do abate. It can be useful in the treatment of early, mild disease. ROUTES OF ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE A variety of tetracyclines are available for oral, parenteral, and topical administration. Tetracycline, oxytetracycline (TERRAMYCIN, others), demeclocycline (declomycin), minocycline (minocin, others), and doxycycline (vibramycin, others) are available in the U.S. 

This chaj)ter discusses three groups of broad-spectrum antibiotics the tetracyclines, tlie macrolid, and the lincosamides. Example of the tetracycline include doxycycline (Vibramycin), minocycline (Minocin), and tetracycline (Sumycin). Examples of the macrohde include azithromycin (Zitliromax), clarithromycin (Biaxin), and erytliromycin (E-Mycin). The lincosamides include clindamycin (Cleocin) and lin-comycin (Lincocin).
