Critical and Operating Speed. In operation, the balls in the mill are carried up in contact with each other and with the walls until the centrifugal force is overcome by the centripetal force. The critical speed of a ball mill is the speed in rpm above which the grinding media will centrifuge and all milling effectively stops.

Although contamination is difficult to avoid completely, various attempts have been made to minimize powder contamination, such as using the same material for the container, the grinding medium and the material to me milled (with obvious limitations for milling effectiveness) and using harder/stronger materials for the container and grinding medium than the powder to be milled. 

Pilot plant can also avoid pitfalls in equipment selection. The two rheograms on figure 11 show how a screw type pump can affect the rheological properties of silica-alumina hydrogel. The shear stress imposed by the rotor-stator couple of the pump results in an increase of the yield value of the hydrogel. In the pump, the size of the particles which compose the hydrogel is decreased by a milling effect and the forces of cohesion are increased. This can stop the flow if the pump characteristics have been underestimated. This results also in modification of the gel structure and ability to be spray dried.
