Microscale Measurements

Different flow physics are encountered in microdevices compared to macrodevices. Therefore, the performance of microdevices cannot be analyzed using similar techniques as macrodevices. The measurement procedure being adopted for macrosystems cannot be directly used in microdevices. Therefore, it is essential to have microscale measurements tools for analysis, design, and optimization of microdevices. Velocity and temperature are the primary performance parameters of microfluidic systems. This chapter reports some salient experimental techniques for measurement of velocity and temperature of microfluidic systems. [Pg.417]

We have shown in this chapter that microscale measurements can provide a good screening method for the design of fire-resistant materials modified by nanoparticles (and fire retardants) and also, they can be used to quantitatively model and predict the behavior in mesoscale experiments even though an additional parameter is needed to predict the reduced MLR in the mesoscale experiments. The major breakthroughs and challenges are the following ... [Pg.547]

Microscale measurements of lAA levels in tissue sections through the vascular cambium of both Pinus and Populus [199,200] have revealed the existence of a steep gradient of lAA levels across the cambium. The existence of these gradients supports the idea that auxin functions in the plant as a positional signal which can specify developmental... [Pg.133]

Pressure-sensitive molecular film (PSMF) is a molecular film of pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) to overcome limitations on application of PSP to microscale measurements and is a powerful technique for pressure measurement of micro gas flows. PSMF enable to nOTiintrusively measure the pressure distribution with a high spatial resolution. In particular, PSMF can measure the pressure distribution of internal gas flows through a micro-channel, which cannot be measured by other methods such as a pressure tap connected to a pressure transducer. [Pg.2871]

The development of ultrasensitive calorimeters enabled ITC to perform microscale measurements of biological samples, such as protein and DNA. However, even the most sensitive models currently available still require milliHter or himdreds of microlitter volumes of reagents in micromolar to millimolar concentration for each titration experiment. Thus, the application of HC may be limited by the availability of reagents. [Pg.336]
