The use of DNA in diagnostics has increased in recent years and is likely to become more important following the now completed Human Genome Project and the rapid elucidation of more and more microbial genomes. Reporter gene technology and biosensors can make use of DNA in the development of toxicity bioassays that are rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective. 

Despite advances in modem technology and increased understanding of both human and microbial genomes, a number of important questions remain. Large-scale microbiome-characterization efforts such as the Human Microbiome Project and American Gut, coupled with advances in both metagenomics and metabolomics are starting to reveal the importance and complex interactions of the gut microbiota.
