The pancreatic glands deliver a mass of enzymes for digestion in the small intestine. Besides digestive enzymes, the pancreatic juice containing 20 up to > 150 mmol Cl" takes part in the control of the microbial community within the small intestine (Gregory et al. 1999). The secretion of Cl" by the entire surface of the small intestine and via bile complete the import of Cl" into the gastrointestinal tract (Table 9.2-4). [Pg.1431]
