Michel studies

What molecular architecture couples the absorption of light energy to rapid electron-transfer events, in turn coupling these e transfers to proton translocations so that ATP synthesis is possible Part of the answer to this question lies in the membrane-associated nature of the photosystems. Membrane proteins have been difficult to study due to their insolubility in the usual aqueous solvents employed in protein biochemistry. A major breakthrough occurred in 1984 when Johann Deisenhofer, Hartmut Michel, and Robert Huber reported the first X-ray crystallographic analysis of a membrane protein. To the great benefit of photosynthesis research, this protein was the reaction center from the photosynthetic purple bacterium Rhodopseudomonas viridis. This research earned these three scientists the 1984 Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Mario holds a PhD in chemistry from Palermo University (1998), the topic of his thesis being the selective oxidation of carbohydrates mentors were David Avnir in Jerusalem and Arjan de Nooy in the Netherlands. He has also studied and worked in France and Germany. In 2005 he was appointed Maitre de conferences associe at the Montpellier Ecole Nationale Superieure de Chimie. Between 1993 and 1994 he worked in the Netherlands, initially at the Rijks Universiteit, Leiden, and then at the TNO Food Research Institute in Zeist. In 1998 he was with Michel Vignon at the Grenoble CNRS, and in 2001 he joined Carsten Bolm s research group at Aachen Polytechnic.

Nicolas Dupre was born in Chatillon-sous-Bagneux, France, in 1975. He received his Ph.D. (2001) degree from Universite Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris VI working under the direction of Professor Michel Quarton. He was appointed as a postdoctoral associate at SUNY Stony Brook in 2002, where he works with Professor Clare P. Grey. His current research interests are focused on the study of the behavior of materials for lithium batteries using solid-state NMR.
